This Term in Our Classroom

This term, our students are embarking on an exciting learning journey that connects classroom learning with real-life experiences, their cultures, their community, and the world around them. Across Mathematics, English Literacy, Learning Pathway, and Visual Arts, students will have opportunities to investigate, create, communicate, collaborate, solve problems, and share their learning.

Our learning is designed to encourage curiosity, confidence, creativity, critical thinking, and perseverance. Students will be supported to take increasing ownership of their learning while working together, sharing ideas, and celebrating their individual strengths and cultural identities.

Mathematics – Thinking, Solving and Applying

This term, students are developing their mathematical thinking through a range of practical and challenging learning experiences. They will strengthen their understanding of number, patterns and relationships, fractions, decimals, measurement, geometry, statistics, and problem-solving.

Students will apply addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to increasingly complex problems and learn to select appropriate strategies to solve mathematical challenges. They will explore measurement in real-life situations, work with units of length, mass, capacity, volume, and time, and investigate patterns and mathematical rules.

Through rich problem-solving tasks, students will be encouraged to explain their thinking, justify their answers, identify mistakes, compare strategies, and persevere with challenging problems. Collaborative mathematics will also provide opportunities for students to learn from one another and communicate their mathematical ideas clearly.

English Literacy – Reading, Writing and Communicating

This term, students are developing their skills as confident readers, thoughtful writers, and effective communicators.

In reading, students will explore a variety of fiction, non-fiction, visual, digital, and media texts. They will learn to monitor their understanding by rereading, annotating, asking questions, visualising, and adjusting their reading strategies. Students will make inferences using evidence, identify and summarise key ideas, interpret deeper meanings, and consider an author's purpose and message.

In writing, students will learn how to communicate information clearly and effectively. They will write informative texts that introduce topics clearly, organise ideas into logical paragraphs, and develop ideas using facts, definitions, examples, and details. Students will also develop their use of precise vocabulary, linking words, headings, diagrams, captions, and other visual features to make their writing engaging and informative.

Students will continue developing their spelling, vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, and oral language skills so that they can communicate their ideas with greater confidence and accuracy.

Learning Pathway – My Culture, My Place

Our Learning Pathway provides students with opportunities to explore who they are, where they belong, their cultures, their communities, and their place in the wider world.

Through our My Culture, My Place approach, students will investigate topics connected to Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori and Pacific cultures, identity, history, significant people, places, and important issues.

Students will learn through inquiry, research, discussion, collaboration, problem-solving, and hands-on learning experiences. They will ask questions, gather information from different sources, consider different perspectives, and share their learning with others.

A strong focus will be placed on culture, belonging, respect, inclusion, teamwork, and contribution. Students will be encouraged to share their own experiences and cultural knowledge while learning to appreciate and respect the identities and perspectives of others.

Through this learning, students will develop the confidence to understand their own place and culture while recognising their role in contributing positively to their school, community, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the wider world.

Visual Arts – Creating, Exploring and Expressing

This term, students will explore Visual Arts as a way of communicating ideas, experiences, emotions, identity, and culture.

Students will experiment with a variety of materials, techniques, and processes through drawing, painting, collage, mixed media, construction, pattern, colour, texture, and three-dimensional art. They will explore how artists use visual elements to communicate meaning and will develop their ability to describe, interpret, and respond to artworks.

Students will also explore artworks connected to Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori, Pacific, and global artistic traditions, making connections between art, culture, history, and identity.

Through individual and collaborative art projects, students will have opportunities to plan, create, experiment, refine, reflect, and share their work. They will be encouraged to take creative risks, develop their own artistic ideas, and celebrate the uniqueness of their cultural identities.

Across all curriculum areas, students will be encouraged to demonstrate our shared values of Discovery, Innovation, Inclusion, Impact, Teamwork, and Fun. We will continue to build a classroom where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, share ideas, challenge themselves, and learn from others.

Most importantly, students will be encouraged to see themselves as capable learners, creative thinkers, problem-solvers, and valued members of our learning community.
